Peer Support and Peer Engagement

Duration: 1 Day

An interactive discussion on how to include and utilize a peer specialist as an equal and important member of the team. We will look at concerns, strengths and how to integrate. The wisdom of lived experience will give participants a clear understanding of what is meant by “Nothing About Us Without Us” and will drive home the importance of the Peer Engagement Specialist.

This training shows how peer support can take many forms, peer support groups, on to one meetings, crisis services, support in employment and creative activities. Studies have shown that agencies that use Peer Support have better outcomes than agencies that use traditional services only. Agencies that use Peer Support see substantial changes for people that include:

  • Reduced substance use

  • Reduced experiences of psychosis and depression

  • Reduced use of health services, including hospitals

  • Increased social support, networks and functioning

  • Increased ability to cope with distress

  • Increased quality of life

  • Increased ability to communicate with health professionals
